Glaucoma is most often due to excessively elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and is a leading cause of blindness in dogs. A 2013 study of 500 dogs with ocular disease found that 15% had a diagnosis of glaucoma. Although typically associated with higher eyeball pressure in dogs, it has been reported to be associated with a normal IOP, at least in toy breeds. More than half of all cases of glaucoma have some sort of genetic or hereditary component.
